Aarhus World Championships

Sunday, August 12

Schedule: The eleventh and last day of the Hempel Sailing World Championships Aarhus 2018. The medals for the last three of the 12 fleets are scheduled to be decided today; the two windsurfing classes, the men’s RS:X and women’s RS:X and the Nacra 17. The Netherlands have already secured gold in both RS:X events with Dorian Van Rijsselberghe and Lilian de Geus mathematically uncatchable.

  • Men’s RS:X (Medal race, 5-minute warning signal 14:07 local time)
  • Women’s RS:X (Medal race, 5-minute warning signal 14:47 local time)
  • Nacra 17 (Medal races, 5-minute warning signal 15:27 local time)

Men’s RS:X
The Netherland’s Dorian Van Rijsselberghe has been a class apart among the windsurfers over the last two weeks. Like many of his would-be rivals, the 29-year-old double Olympic champion has only won two races, but his consistency was unmatched. Only once in the 12 races leading to this medal race did he finish out of the top 10.

Even his highly-rated fellow countryman, Kiran Badloe, 23, has not been able to keep close and lies 23 points behind in the silver medal position. This is where the battle starts, with France’s Louis Giard, in third, five points behind. Poland’s Pawel Tarnowski is just two points back in fourth and Greece’s Byron Kokkalanis is fifth, six points further back.

Given what we have seen in the other medal races, the silver and bronze are still wide open.

Women’s RS:X
The Netherland’s Lilian de Geus has been even more dominant in the women’s event after not finishing lower than ninth in the last two weeks.  The 26-year-old De Geus, fourth at the Rio 2016 Olympics, is 30 points clear of China’s Yunxiu Lu in second. Lu is ten points clear of France’s 2016 Rio Olympic champion, Charline Picon in third – if Lu finishes fifth or better she is guaranteed silver.

The bronze is where it heats up with Britain’s Emma Wilson, just three points behind Picon and Poland’s Zofia Noceti-Klepacka just 0.2 of a point behind Wilson.

Nacra 17 Foiling
The top four boats are separated by just six points in what promises to be a battle royale these 17ft foiling cats with mixed crews. The pre-race favourites, Italy’s Ruggero Tita and Caterina Marianna Banti are one point clear of the exciting outsiders, Australia, Team Outteridge, Nathan and Haylee. Argentina’s Rio 2016 Olympic champions, Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli, are two points further back.

The largest roars from stadium crowd will come for home favourites, Denmark’s Lin Ea Cenholt and Christian Peter Lübeck – the only one of the four with the woman driving where the woman’s. They are fourth three points off the bronze.

Weather forecast:
There should be a stable 8-14 knot west to south-westerly wind for the medal races today (230°-270°). A warm front is approaching Aarhus from the south-west but it will be the coldest day of the World Championships, with cloud cover and showers likely.

Temperature: 14-16 ℃
Sea temperature: 19 ℃

The medal races for 49er and 49erFX were run yesterday.
